[You find yourselves in a very shiny, very sophisticated-looking room, all glass, porcelain, and silver panelling inlaid with a winding pattern of roses. In the middle is a pedestal, with two items resting atop of it: a red and white ball, and a glass console.

To your left is a wooden closet. Opposite the entrance, and up a short flight of stairs, is a door fashioned delicately carved wood.

You hear Nyssa’s voice:]

Would you like to be the very best, my doves? The best there ever was? I’d like to say that catching them is your real test, but, alas, I’ve taken care of that little detail for you. As for who—or should I say, what?—they are … why, you need only throw the ball to find out!

Your first task will be to meet them, name them, and spend money to equip and augment them for the battles to come. … You may also, if you wish, outfit yourselves for the occasion! Bonus points will be awarded to the two best-dressed teams.

Antidote – an item for you to hold onto. Feeding it to your monster will cure it of Confusion, Sleep, or Poison effects. [COSTS: 200]

HP Toffee – a chewy piece of toffee that raises your monster’s base HP by 15. [COSTS: 150]

PP Scone – a light, fluffy scone that raises your monster’s base PP by 5. [COSTS: 150]

(PP: 10) Somnolent Song: Monsters influenced by Somnolent Song will fall asleep for one round. [COSTS: 100]
(PP: 10) Double Team: Your monster appears to split itself into six copies! Their opponent has a 6/10 chance of missing them for two rounds. [COSTS: 100]
(PP: 10) Charm: Oh, my! A monster influenced by Charm will be so infatuated that they only do half damage for two rounds. [COSTS: 100]
(PP: 20) Resist: Your monster braces itself, and will be impervious to Confuse Ray, Somnolent Song, and Charm for three rounds. [COSTS: 200]
(PP: 20) Shield: A shimmering shield surrounds your monster, halving damage done to it for two rounds. [COSTS: 200]
(PP: 10) Rally: Is your monster refusing to obey you? Customize a 10-word pep talk to encourage them, and they’ll carry out your orders without question for five rounds! Can only be used twice for the duration of the game. [COSTS: 300]

(PP: 5) Tail whip: Your monster smacks at their opponent with their tail—or closest equivalent—causing 5 HP damage. [COSTS: 100]
(PP: 35) Solar Beam: Your monster misses a turn to gather energy, and then unleashes a massive 50 HP attack! Can be interrupted by Sleep, or Confuse, or being knocked out. [COSTS: 500]
(PP: 10) Poison Needle: Deals 10 HP damage immediately, and 5 HP damage per round for three rounds. [COSTS: 200]
(PP: 5) Cry Louder: Your monster wails like somebody stole its candy! The resulting ear-ache causes 10 HP damage. [COSTS: 100]
(PP: 10) Forgotten Teapot: Your monster releases a jet of icy tea at their opponent, causing 15 HP damage. [COSTS: 100]
(PP: 15) Crockery: A rain of falling crockery causes 15 HP damage! If used after Forgotten Teapot, this is increased to 30 HP. [COSTS: 200]
(PP: 15) Takedown: Your monster tackles their opponent to the floor, causing 10 HP damage. There’s a 50% chance that their opponent will Flinch—if they do, they’ll miss a round! [COSTS: 100]

PP is going to be a majorly limiting factor here. [NODNOD.]

We need Shield and Confuse Ray... and I'd say probably Poison Needle. It's the best bang for our buck as far as power goes. That's 400 points, so we can spend 300 on more PP, giving us 60. With 100 more for Cry Louder, that's enough to attack for... [Counting on his fingers...] Shield, confuse ray, poison needle... 40... then four cry louders makes 60. Seven turns, and over that we'll have a good chance of dealing with them.

A-and we can spend the last 200 on a pair of Red Berries to restore 5 each, making us have nine total turns of attacks.
