RATATOSKR

Years ago, you recieved a charter from the United Empire, and were officially made a member of the newly christened Trade Company! Your goal was to seek fortune wherever it may be found in this strange land...of course, through force of arms, if the natives failed to cooperate.

But now things are different. You no longer work for the Empire, but for your homeland of Columbia -- and to a lesser extent, the people you've come to associate here in Jambudvipa. With your legion of slave workers, you are ready to bring the 'people' of this land to heel and make them better serve your country.

What are you here for? Riches, knowledge, recognition. Your destiny is to carve a path through these savage lands, and to accomplish something that will make you known. The ascent to glory is never easy, but you're confident you will reach those lofty heights.

You'll reach the top, or die trying.

Really, we need to do both. But if we focus on the beast people first without a way to control the Empire, we'll get crushed right along with them as fellow rebels. They're the weaker side and they need time to rebuild.

Reform from within is definitely out and I can't do an assassination. I can't even infiltrate the nobility.

If we get the Empire in a economic chokehold, we can make them change their policies toward the oppressed side.

But how do we do that? And how do we convince the beast people we want to help them as well?

[Considering.]

I can talk to the other tribes. I look like a beast person now--I may be able to find out if the tribes have something valuable to trade. If we have exclusive trading rights, and keep our source secret...I don't want to deal in weapons if we don't have to.

I've got an idea for how to handle the Empire. The beast people I'm not sure about yet....I don't want to just spark a war. Some of them would be okay with a mass slaughter and that's not right, either. Every Empire has innocents.

[thinks]

Yeah, that's a good idea. We want both sides to need us more than they don't, ultimately. Just don't mention that we're technically slavers right now.

I won't.

[Dryly.] But if we already have the reputation, I'll work around it. I'll start by asking into the other tribes. Take Sol and Knight with you--you'll be doing more obvious work, you might need the muscle.

We might not, just yet. We didn't even have the paperwork on us.

[nodding]

And it'll go better for you without humans in your company. We can meet back at one of the shrines.

Go for the Sky. It seemed pretty much abandoned.

...

Just don't sing.
