[All the teams are ushered to their own tables, secluded somewhere in the depths of the garden. There's a pot of tea (because of course there is), a bowl of fresh-picked fruit, and a messy stack of blank papers and pencils. In the very center of the table is another piece of paper, this one with a very simple set of instructions written across the top.]

• As a team, create a list of story elements. This list must include:

-A setting
-A hero
-A villain
-An object
-A one-sentence quote

• General elements are usually better than overly-specific ones. No gaming the system! (Yeah, I'm looking at you, smartass.)

• That's it.

• So get goin' already!!

Seems simple enough. I was expecting more of a challenge.

Not all games are too difficult. Let's see... I can pick half of the elements, and you can pick the other half. Does that sound fair?

Certainly and I hope you don't mind if I let you choose. I don't have a lot to draw on, so far I have only one memory.

I don't mind, of course. Hopefully we'll be able to win, so you can recall more.

Let's see... The object can be a sword, the setting can be a forest, and the villain can be a dragon. You can choose the hero and the quotation.

The hero would logically be a knight, then. And as for a quote... 'I won't be beaten that easily.'

That way it could be used for the hero or the villain. It gives us options.

Ah, I like that! Especially that it's versatile.

Setting: Forest.
Hero: Knight.
Villain: Dragon.
Object: Sword.
Quote: "I won't be beaten that easily."

[The paper with your list suddenly rolls up and disappears in a tiny puff of smoke. After a moment, another paper appears and drops on the table in its place, unrolling itself helpfully to reveal a new set of instructions.]

• Write a short story using the following elements:

-The place: A pirate ship
-The hero: Scientists
-The villain: A huge, sentient sea monster.
-An important item: A car
-The line: "You could have asked for help! Instead you get... THE HURT!"

• Stories will be judged by the other teams on the basis of both creativity and quality.

• So if you can't be good, ya' can at least try to be weird!!

We weren't in trouble until the car. How can we work that in?

All I know of cars is that they are vehicles... Maybe someone could use the car to reach the ship?

They are typically a land vehicle. They don't do well in water.

But we might be able to make something up...

Let me see... There could be reports of a sea monster, and so scientists come on a ship with some pirates, because the pirates know more about this monster than anyone and the scientists need their assistance to fight it. I'm not sure how to incorporate a vehicle, though.

Pirates are usually looking for treasure. Maybe the car is the treasure they're seeking.

I suppose a sea monster could have found a way to take a car at some point. It must be a very rare and valuable one, though.

Yes. That would make sense. Especially if our scientists were seeking it for scientific purposes.

Now... We only have to decide how to work this quotation into the story.

But why would they ask the sea monster for help? Help getting the car, maybe?

I meant more that the sea monster would tell the scientists that before attacking and eventually being defeated.

Well, yes, but part of the quotation implies that the people could have asked the monster for help in some way. I'm wondering what they would have asked for help with.

Retrieving the car, perhaps? If it was in a place only the monster could reach.

The ship set out to find the lost auto treasure of the south seas with fifty stout pirates and a dozen heroic scientists. Their mission was difficult and surely some of them would die. But they were bound to their task and would not quit until the Car of Ultimate Power was theirs to study and learn from.

Through choppy waters they sailed, though their hearts never forgot the glory of their goal; finally they approached the great beast. The fight was long and bloody, and near the end it almost seemed all hope was lost. "You could have asked for help." The monster screamed, speaking of the prize they sought. "Instead you get the hurt!" However, at that very moment, one of the pirates let loose a mighty spear which drove itself into the monster's eye. Both scientists and pirates rejoiced as they hauled the Car of Ultimate Power from the ocean.

[ She nods. ]

Better than the elements of this story deserve. Let's turn it in.
