Most of your time will be spent on the bridge, which is exactly as fancy as you’d expect it to be — it looks a little like this. (The chairs are super comfortable!) Your brand new artificial intelligence — which, if you investigate, you’ll find is housed in a small computer chip — has been implanted into the computer terminal on the back wall. The diagnostics readout displayed along the bottom of the screen tells you that the AI has only been outfitted with the most basic of Stability Cores, and is currently Critically Unstable.

It is the year 5256, and humanity has spread across two galaxies. Technological leaps have been massive — super powerful, prohibitively expensive AI have recently been developed, with the capacity for beyond human-like growth, development, and learning. It’s said that a single AI could be capable of managing a fully outfitted fleet of galactic class star ships. Trials are looking positive.

A small number of ships — yours included — have been selected to take part in a competitive military research project. You lucky devils! The government has given you a brand new AI of your very own, complete with a basic Stability Core and a generous grant of 1000 credits. The only downside is that … well, one SC of that calibre might not be enough to sustain the AI for long.

You manage to locate Trigger the Terrible Two-Finger, who is a green-skinned alien with twelve fingers, and convince him to help you rob the Knick Knacks and Things Junkyard. During your exploits you are "bitten" in the hand one of the guard dogs, which doesn't hurt but it does leave a bright red patch of red paint on the skin and clothing around said hand. It doesn't even look like blood. But it's totally blood, okay.

You and Trigger manage to steal the cores! Unfortunately, being a dastardly criminal, Trigger betrays you at the very end and makes off with one of the high quality cores, which only leaves you with 2. What a jerk!

The owner of Knick Knacks and Things Junkyard has put a bounty on your head for the theft. It's no longer safe for you to wander about the galaxy freely.

In addition, you receive a message from the Cats (also known as the S.S. Estelle): the AI are being experimented on. People are splitting them in an attempt to make more. AI are like humans — nothing good comes from attempting to split them, and such experiments should be stopped.

The police are suspicious … but, honestly, they’ve got so much bigger fish to fry right now that they really don’t have time to be dealing with small-fry like you. They give you a stern talking to and get on their way.

You purchase a … … it looks like a lion, but it’s the same size as a housecat! It likes swimming, burrowing in people’s shirts, and stealing food. You also buy a medium quality core from the government, which helps to stabilize your AI.
