[ putting a hand on his shoulder, murmuring soothing nonsense ]

[he flinches a bit, and he's yammering something under his breath that doesn't make sense.]

[grandstanding]

[there's something going very, very wrong in his thoughts. he keeps flashing on dizzying images of dirty metal, blood all over a table, lightning burning through his chest, knives cutting through his chest, and an endless internal screaming for help that he knows isn't coming.]

[ wincing at that ]

[grandstanding]

[he manages, after a few moments, to fix his gaze on Charles's face. but whether he's really seeing him or not is debatable.]

[grandstanding]

[reaches up and fists his hand in Charles's shirt, yanking him down to latch onto tightly.]

[ okay, wrapping his arms around him and burying his face in his neck ]

[grandstanding]

[doing the same, breathing too fast and shallow but getting it a little under control with the contact.]

[ whimpers quietly ]

[he can't do anything about that. not here. but he circles one hand up to cradle the back of Charles's head, keeping him close.]

[strokes his hair, a little jerkily.]

[he pulls apart from him, and gets to his feet cautiously. he sucks in a pained breath as he does, those wounds still not fully healed.]
