[Maya's Heart]

[Everything goes white, almost blindingly, as you enter Eveningstar's heart.... it's so overwhelming that you forget, for a moment, what you're doing, why you're here, and details about yourself start to slip---]

[but then it all stops, abruptly, and your senses return to you]

[OOC: Channel is #quitplayingames]

[ Looks towards Blade with a frown. This was going to be a lot harder than she anticipated. No cute burgers to make everything better. ]

[he looks at Schooler, then back to the witness. he's not going to slam his fists because he's 2cool, but he'll do the minimum lawyering required. so he presses.]

Hold it. Which game are you referring to?

That game had a set of rules where teams were killed by the decisions of other teams. Not individuals. So saying the blame lies with her is exaggerating in the extreme.

Objection; she broke the rules because she cared too much about others to follow them.
grandstanding: (Thunderdome.)

But the intent wasn't.

[PRESENT: Blade's profile.]

You see that 'extreme' comment? I was the one who wanted to kill the other teams. What Star did was out of an inability to cope with the idea that she would have to do that. She wanted to die rather than harm others.

[PRESENT AGAIN: Bluebird's profile]

Nearly all of these profiles mention Star's concern for others. She was a scared girl who couldn't handle the pressure, and thought that taking Epona out of the game would cause less deaths. What happened after was not her fault; she was not responsible for the actions of other teams, or the Echo, who is the real killer here.

You want to talk about Star being a murderer? Take it from a real one - she's not. Murder needs malicious intent, and there's not a malicious bone in her body.
grandstanding: (I can't feel all the things.)

[this is new information, but he thinks he sees where it's going. he doesn't know anything about it, of course. still, he's come this far.]

Second-hand recollections of people who aren't Star. None of which proves anything, except that everyone assumed it was her. Tell me, does Star remember killing her sister? Being convicted? Our memories are incomplete puzzles, where we can't see the whole picture.

I've seen Star's memories. She loved her sister. I doubt she did anything like killing her sister.

[PRESENT: Phoenix profile. and pointing DIRECTLY AT THE PROSECUTION.]

And she has a memory of saying goodbye to this man, who thanked her for all her help. That's not the behaviour of someone looking at a girl he thinks is a criminal.
grandstanding: (We had it all back then.)

[all right; smacks his palms down against the table.]

But you don't remember doing it. Do you, Eveningstar.

[The witness speaks up this time, sounding uncertain]

No, I... I found her just after she was....

....But I would never! But nobody would believe me, not even--
grandstanding: (That will not end well for you.)

[now it's Blade's turn to glare at the prosecution. and boy, is it a strong one.]

Only someone grasping at straws would ask something that stupid. The difference between being too late to save someone and being the one to kill them is miles and miles.

You may as well say failing to step on the brakes of a car is the same as cutting them.
