Canis's heart

The moment you step through the mirror door, you seem to - slip, as if the floor were made of wax, but when you fall there is no floor to catch you; only darkness.

You fall for some time. Eventually, it feels as if you're not falling at all - but rather, floating . . . and some time after that, it almost feels as if you have no body at all. The light from which the entrance of Canis's heart is disappears quickly, and you're left with nothing - not even your own screams, if you have any; nothing seems to leave your throat, and there's no sound at all, besides. Even the rushing of wind is gone, and your own pulse seems to fade away. . .

. . . what penetrates your consciousness next is the soft sound of music. Someway or another, you find yourself on a white platform; you're dressed in plain clothes of your team color, all items gone from your person. In front of you, four stones float; all perfectly square and identical to each other. Each have images - a sword, a staff, a bow and arrow, and a sparkling circle . . . you understand what you must do.

[ SITTING UP VERY FAST and. making sure his thing is still there. where is his thing where is the not!canis. ]

Devotion is lying down at your side, shards still tightly held.

"Oh, you're back."

The gardener is still pulling out flowers one at a time, but the entire place is bursting at the seams. . . speaking of which, the entire place also looks kind of different; dark, muddy-looking roots wrap themselves around the gazebo's pillars and the tables have been flipped upside down; one row of flowers has completely turned into black, wet-looking vines with decomposing leaves. In the midst of it all, Sirius looks completely calm, pulling at the flowers, regardless of their state.

lifting devotion up and wading through the flowers to sirius. ]

Hey! You gotta--help me fix 'em, he won't wake up an' he's not breathin' an'--

Looks totally calm.

"Well, yeah. You broke him. What else did you think would happen?"

So fix him!

"I can't do that. If I try to do that he'll be even worse. Canis, that is.

So why don't you fix him?"

I don't know how!

"You don't need to yell. . . he's only going to disappear."

I don't--I don't want him to disappear!

"But you're the one who broke him. . . you really want to fix him?"

I didn't mean ta break him like that--

"But you did.

. . . look. He's called Devotion because he devotes himself. He is Canis's devotion, to Haruki his king. Now he doesn't have anything to devote himself to, so of course he's going to start disappearing. He doesn't have a purpose now. Those shards are the last things he can cling to, but they're not going to ground him forever."

[ ok so.

he did exactly what he wanted to do but--but he doesn't want to make an actual person disappear, not a piece of canis. not like this. this is--just as bad as killing him, isn't it. watching him fade away like this. it hurts it hurts his heart and it feels really really bad and he didn't want to destroy him like this and why is it like this why does this hurt this shouldn't hurt but it does and-- ]

So he jus'--needs a new purpose, right.

"Right. But if you do that, he's going to build his sanctuary up again. That's what Devotion does."

[ but would it hurt canis to do that to him. to change his heart like that without his permission, to force something like that onto him when he doesn't want it but he probably didn't want mira to destroy it either and he did that and he's. fuck. ]

How?

"Well, he's a knight. . . tell him to protect you. Tell him to devote himself to you. Tell him you're his king. . . . that kind of stuff."

But I don't want that!

"Then I guess. . . watch him disappear."

And he does start to disappear, for. . . lack of better sense of the word. His body begins to depress, becoming mushy, like a sack of sand. . . you can almost hear sand inside of him, even.

just. raising devotion's upper half as best as he can as he is to press their foreheads together again. ]

Canis. Hey--listen, a'right? You're a knight, aren't ya? An' it's--a knight's duty ta protect, ain't it? Jus'--stay with me. Stay with Barghest, protect Barghest, don't let Barghest down--protect all of 'em with all you got. Stay with me 'cause I need you a lot an' if you jus' disappear like this I won't be able ta handle it. I can't do that. If ya--if you need a king like that, if you need someone like that then jus'--you can depend on me, okay? I won't let you down.

His eyes open, as he looks up at Mira; it doesn't seem like he's registering Mira's words, especially because his ears seem to be melting, but . . . slowly, everything begins to pull itself back together in Devotion's body, reversing the effects. It's a slow-going, but steady process. . .

. . . the shards spill onto the ground when Devotion finally raises a hand - still cold, blood having yet to reach that area - to touch Mira's cheek.

In a quiet voice, he mumbles, ". . . are you alright?"

[ he's not dead or melted or whatever the fuck was going on with that and--mira's relieved. ]

. . yeah, 'm fine.

He studies Mira for a moment, before smiling, weakly but quickly gaining strength.

". . . good."

And he pets Mira's face gently, before trying to pull himself up, glass spilling - but his wounds seem to be closing, even closing over the glass shards and. . . absorbing them? That's totally healthy.

[ facepets are great yes. mira's not even. paying attention to the glass shards shit that was a gigantic mess of panic to get here and. save him. did he actually save him fuck if he knows. ]

. . I need ta go an' fix something. [ before he fucks up more shit christ. ]

"What is it? Did you get hurt? Let me help you."

And, completely unprecedented by previous actions, Devotion pulls himself closer to wrap his arms around Mira, hugging him.

[ immense guilt problems in three. . two. . ]

No, 's you. I gotta--go fix another part of you. [ sslowly trying to put devotion down. ]
